From styling hair to designing clothes and art, Takia Scott uses her creativity to impact the lives of men, women, and children. “I wear a lot of hats; under that comes a lot of different responsibilities but I don’t fear away from them, I take all of them and strive with joy,” Takia said.

She began to pursue cosmetology in the 6thgrade. Her best friend’s mom had a daycare inside her house, and when the daycare closed around 5:30 p.m., she would let Takia turn it into a hair salon where she would do people’s hair in the community. In the 8thgrade, a teacher told Takia that she should be a hairstylist. Takia could see history beginning to repeat as she reflects on having an older sister and aunt who both are hairstylists.

The Savannah, Georgia native came to Houston at the age of 16. Takia had become pregnant and her mother believed that leaving Georgia could help her daughter not become a product of a similar cycle she endured. The day after graduating from high school, she attended beauty school at Visible Changes, where she soon began to work.

Takia says that hair replacement is not taught in beauty school so she constantly had to educate herself on the subject. “My story is a journey up until this day,” she said. “I was born with hair loss so by having this story, it has always been in me to deal with hair loss.” 23 years in the hair industry she does not feel limited by the hair loss. “It’s like your heavenly father may take away one thing but supply you with many options,” she said. “That is how I look at hair; something was taken away but I was given options to be endless.”

As she began to start her own business, branding herself became a new concept to her. “Not having someone pave the way for your journey causes you to learn along the way,” she said. 12 years ago she started Sophisticated Images, where she specializes in providing hair loss solutions to her clients, both men and women. “If you are an expert in your own area people will gravitate towards that.” She feels blessed reflecting on the last year of consistently advertising her business on social media.

Takia encourages other entrepreneurs to not let anything hold them back. “It’s getting past your own fears,” she said. “Fears hold people back from so much. Fears come in so many different forms from anxiety, childhood, looking at other people, even judgment.”

So, what is next for Takia? She has teamed up with Wigs for Kids to provide hair loss services to kids with conditions ranging from alopecia to cancer. She is also considering launching a lash line in addition to her custom wigs to add to the Sophisticated Images brand.

Looking back on her journey, she has no regrets. “I did not know it could grow to this magnitude…everything came together.”
